Ramaphosa administration considering a basic income grant for unemployed South Africans aged 18 - 59

President Cyril Ramaphosa says his administration is seriously considering proposals for unemployed South Africans aged between 18 and 59 to receive a basic income grant. This as more than 40 civil society organisations have mobilised to demand that the government urgently introduce a monthly payment of R1, 268 to respond to the poverty crisis.  

The Women’s Legal Centre is one of the civil society groups taking part in the basic income grant national strategy that includes litigation to force the government's hand on the initiative. The Centre's Director Seehaam Samai elaborates.
