Strict punishment and up to 1M tk fine collected for crossing Padma river during nationwide lockdown

Despite the strict lockdown persisting in Dhaka and alerts on severe punishment for violating the laws, a good number of people have been approaching to cross the Padma river close to the Shimulia port of Munshiganj aiming to reach Dhaka.

In the last 24 hours, mobile courts have caught quite a many travellers who had been attempting to cross the river and collected somewhat 1 million Tk as fine from them. A lot of people sneaked into the shipment vehicles and tried crossing the river as on Saturday morning. However, immediately after reaching Shimulia port, they realized there was no vehicular transportation available and had to start off the journey on foot. 

Louhajang upazila, Assistant commissioner of land, Kawsar Hamid said that they are only permitting the movement and crossing of emergency automobiles and cargo vehicles. He added that they are not permitting the movement of anyone if they do not have emergency or adequate reasons for crossing.
