The scaly-breasted munia or spotted munia (Lonchura punctulata) are known in the pet trade as nutmeg mannikin or spice finch. They are typically found in small flocks.
Typical adults are dark chestnut-brown above, white below, with fine dark scaly pattern on belly. The sexes are similar, although males have darker markings on the underside and a darker throat than females.
Juveniles are plain brown all over with slightly paler underparts.
They form small flocks that give finch-like twittering calls.
