Here are 6 Tips For Directing Your First Feature Film

After 17 films and 20 years in the movie business, I decided to direct a film. Like so many other things that happen in the business of film, it comes down to timing, and the unfolding of certain events.

I had asked two different people to direct this film (called Ask Me to Dance) prior to me deciding that I wanted to direct. The first person had ideas that I thought were completely wrong for the script. The second said that she wouldn’t be comfortable directing a dance film because she didn’t know enough about dancing. I did! I used to teach ballroom dancing.

So I took a step back and thought about all the films I’ve made where the director made choices that I didn’t agree with. It was then that I realized that I wanted to make the choices for this film. It was almost as if, because it was comedy and dancing, two things I’m VERY experienced in, I didn’t want anyone else ruining it!
