It was the will, grit, and sheer determination of Mala Pal which led her to break the stereotypes. Bound by the traditions of Men making the idols, it was Mala Pal's Andar Se Mazbooti that led her to be one of the first woman idol makers in Kumartuli.
Mala Pal, 34, a woman idol maker in Kumartuli is working and taking her classes on her workshop. At the age of 14 she entered this business. She said, Her father was an established artisan in Kumartuli but he did not want his daughter to learn the trade. When I started working in the shop at age 14 and we got more orders for idols, the financial problems lessened. Now I am sending idols to clients in overseas.
