Quake II: The Reckoning | Unit 1: Wilderness - Nightmare 100%

A playthrough of Quake II: The Reckoning on Nightmare, getting all kills and secrets. Played on Yamagi sourceport.

The Reckoning is the first expansion pack (or a mission pack, as they are called) for Quake II. It was developed by Xatrix Entertainment, creators of Redneck Rampage and Kingpin: Life of Crime, they later rebranded as Grey Matter Interactive and developed Return To Castle Wolfenstein and Call of Duty: United Offensive, they are now known as Treyarch and are one of 3 main studios behind Call of Duty games. With devs like these you know you are in for a ride, and oh boy what a ride it is.

If you liked Quake II, you'll love The Reckoning. It's vanilla game but better, new weapons, new enemies, new music and most importantly: new maps. The levels in this expansion are action-packed and rarely offer downtime, they are mostly straight-forward, linear and hard to get lost in, feeling closer to Doom/Quake I levels. That doesn't mean the levels are bad, quite the opposite, they are greatly designed and offer faster-paced gameplay than vanilla Quake II. The difficulty has also been increased, although it's not balls to the wall, we'll have to wait to Ground Zero for that.

Unfortunately there's no information on who designed each individual level, although there were 2 main level designers: Mal Blackwell and Dan Koppel.

In Unit 1 we land in the swamps of Stroggos, inhabited by a new enemy type: Gekks. They are similar to mutants, but have less health, fire projectiles and have bright yellow blood. They can also swim and jump very high up, making them the most agile enemies in the game. Still, they don't pose much of a threat.

We make our way through the rusty sewer pipes and into the compound, in which we should've landed in the first place.
