A solar flare is a powerful explosion of radiation caused by the release of magnetic energy from the sun. According to NASA, the energy released by solar flares is equivalent to millions of 100-megaton atomic bombs exploding all at once. It's fortunate that the Earth's atmosphere shields us from its harmful radiation. If one is directed at Earth, the accompanying radiation tidal wave can have a number of effects on our planet. Large solar storms pose a risk to technologically oriented lifestyles because they can disrupt GPS signals, damage satellites, pose health risks to orbiting astronauts, and can even result in power grid failure.
