China on warpath with EU, Taiwan official jets into bloc as tensions boil.
TENSIONS are rising between Brussels and Beijing, with China urging the EU to stop interacting with Taiwan.
China is furious that a Taiwanese official is planning to visit Brussels as part of a European tour that is portraying the island as being independent. Beijing considers Taiwan to be part of its territory.
Taiwanese Foreign Minister Joseph Wu has spent the week visiting the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
He is expected to attend an anti-China rally in Rome at the end of the week.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will be in Italy at around the same time.
China hounded the Czech Senate for inviting Wu to visit the country, calling this a “malicious provocative act”.
It further attacked Wu for “promoting secessionism” by touring the Continent.
But, if it goes ahead, a visit to Brussels will be even more controversial.
An EU spokesperson told POLITICO she was “aware of the visit”, adding that “we do engage with Taiwan even in the absence of diplomatic recognition”.
This provoked a strong response from China.
